• Created seach engine optimization (SEO) for the PhotoShelter Collection (PSC), a stock photography site. Fewer than ten pages were indexed by Google prior to SEO. Implementation of SEO included:
  • Modification of AJAX pages to allow search-engine access
  • Deployment of search-engine friendly directory pages
  • Development of a dynamic Sitemap for over 500,000 pages, including Google's unreleased Image Sitemap format
  • Full integration with Google Analytics, including the e-commerce module, to track page performance
• Designed and implemented the billing system for the PSC using Postgres, PHP, and memcache. Billing system features included:
  • Secure AES-encrypted storage of sensitive information, including tax IDs and credit cards
  • Credit line management for customers
  • Time-delayed royalty payments to photographers
  • U.S. and international tax withholding
  • Full electronic and paper invoicing
• Released new versions of the PhotoShelter Uploader, a Java application, to patch bugs and enhance image uploads.
• Used Objective C in the Cocoa development environment to update PhotoShelter's existing Aperture plug-in to patch bugs, update the installer, and support asynchronous uploads. Created additional plug-in to allow PSC submissions.
• Integrated Movable Type into the PhotoShelter website, including plug-ins installations and template customization.

• Developed the Online Photo Upload System for Sports Illustrated (SI). This application allows photographers to quickly download the contents of digital cards, caption photos, and transmit web-ready images to editors.
  • Used to process over 300,000 images at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing for both the printed magazine and SI.com website
  • Refactored existing Visual Basic .NET application for disconnected use and improved performance
  • Created Perl scripts to generate captions from Oracle database and email them as XMP attachments
  • Wrote multi-tier applications in Java to process application registration information through corporate firewalls
• Created technical design of Time Inc.'s first new editorial system in over ten years. Solved problems during deployment. Systems implemented a multi-tier design with WoodWing SCE, F5 load balancers, Solaris clusters, Apache, Oracle RAC, SOAP, and multicast and are now used to produce content for all Time Inc. publications.

• Improved productivity of SI by developing desktop and web-based applications in Visual Basic .NET and Java to manage digital photos and assignments. The applications have been in continuous use since 2004 to process over 20,000 digital photos weekly.
  • Reduced staff requirements by eight people between the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2000 Olympics
• Developed software in Perl to process non-XML data feeds from an RS-232 serial line to produce a daily magazine during the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.
  • Implementation of over 300-page specification in under three weeks
  • Feeds were processed and formatted for use by non-technical art directors
  • Daily magazine required no-fail system
• Created software for SI at the NCAA College Basketball National Championship (Final Four) to capture images directly from cameras attached to networked laptops.
  • Developed work-arounds for problems in vendor-supplied camera software
  • Coordinated receipt of images from 30 laptops
• Developed web-based invoice-submission system for photographers in Java, SOAP, and Oracle allowing them to maintain their own contact information and retrieve information about assignments.
  • Designed multi-tier architecture to work through corporate firewalls and DMZ hosts
• Redesigned workflows and developed software to allow SI to send pages to press several hours earlier. The same workflow and software was subsequently deployed to Entertainment Weekly (EW); they were subsequently able to reduce their headcount by six and eliminate missed deadlines.
  • Developed software in Java to provide a seamless front end to existing SI systems:
    • MediaServer from the Software Construction Company
    • WebNative from Xinet
    • Custom assignment software (PL/SQL and Oracle)
• Primary system administrator for SI's and EW's imaging server. The most recent system consists of two Sun Enterprise 3800s connected to a pair of Sun A5200 fibrechannel disk arrays.
  • Experienced no significant unplanned downtime during system lifetime
  • Configured active/passive cluster using Veritas Cluster
  • Provided fully redundant storage using Veritas Volume Manager
  • Replicated critical data offsite using rsync
